Can External Fixators Be Sterilized for Surgery? A Prospective Cohort Study in Orthopaedic Trauma Patients
This IRB approved prospective study evaluated if our current external fixator preoperative prep protocol resulted in a culture negative environment on the external hardware. We determined that these external fixators could be left in place for secondary procedures as the culture results showed bacteria and fungus that rarely cause infections in trauma patients. Accepted by Injury for publication.
